Doug Steenland

Douglas M. (Doug) Steenland joined the board of directors of American International Group, Inc. in 29, where he currently serves as lead independent director. He is also the lead director of Hilton Worldwide and sits on the boards of American Airlines and the London Stock Exchange Group. He was formerly chair of the board for Travelport Worldwide and Performance Food Group.

Doug joined Northwest Airlines in 1991. He became president of the airline in 21, and then president and chief executive officer in 24. He led Northwest’s industry changing merger with Delta Airlines in October 28. Before joining Northwest, he worked as a senior partner at the Washington, DC law firm of Verner, Liipfert, Bernhard, McPherson, and Hand (now part of DLA Piper). He also has served in the office of the general counsel of the US Department of Transportation.

Doug has served on many professional and community boards, and committees including, Air Transport Association, Guthrie Theatre, Twin Cities United Way, Minnesota Symphony Orchestra, Super Bowl XL Committee (held in Detroit in 26), Georgetown College, and George Washington University School of Law.

He holds a juris doctor from the National Law Center at George Washington University (1976) and a bachelor’s degree in history from Calvin College (1973).
