David Johnson

David Johnson has an academic background in economics, public health, and health services research in addition to being a fellowship-trained urologic oncologist. The topics of David’s prior research experience and publications include value-based payment models, surgical outcomes, cancer screening, quality, utilization and appropriateness of care, overdiagnosis and overtreatment, and shared decision-making.

David’s career goal is to transform the healthcare payment and delivery system to incentivize high quality, affordable healthcare while improving the patient and provider experience. He was previously working to systematically transform how healthcare is paid for, with a particular focus on specialty care, as Medical Director of Value Programs at Blue Cross Blue Shield of NC, the largest commercial payer in North Carolina.

He is currently clinical operating partner at Rubicon Founders, an entrepreneurial healthcare investment firm focused on building and growing transformational companies. Based in Nashville, Tennessee, Rubicon Founders is led by Adam Boehler and brings together a core team of investment, operating, and technology professionals who work to put patients and doctors first. Rubicon invests and partners to build meaningful businesses that create enduring value by transforming the way people receive care. He continues to provide clinical care and resident education as a Clinical Assistant Professor of Urology at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill.
