Executive Experience: Bruce Besanko retired from Kohl’s in February 22 as chief financial officer. Besanko joined in 217 to lead all financial activities of the company; as well as the credit card business, including US and overseas call centers; corporate and business development; indirect procurement; and real estate. He sat on the operating committee of the Company.

Previously, Bruce served as executive vice president, chief operating officer, and chief financial officer for Supervalu, Inc. from 213 to 217. In this role he was responsible for the wholesale and retail operations including merchandising, marketing, sales, supply chain operations, and pharmacy, as well as all the financial operations of the company. Prior to Supervalu, Bruce served as executive vice president, chief financial officer, and chief administrative officer for OfficeMax from 29 to 213 where he oversaw the corporation’s financial and administrative functions. Besanko began his career as a CFO with Yankee Candle, Inc. in 25.

Bruce is the audit committee chair of Diebold Nixdorf, Inc., a publicly traded company, since 218; as well as the USO of Illinois since 21. He previously served on the board of advisors for the University of Cincinnati College of Arts and Sciences, and the University of Chicago Booth School of Business.

Additional information: Bruce earned a bachelor of science degree, magna cum laude, in psychology from the University of Cincinnati and holds a master of business administration degree in finance and strategy from the University of Chicago.

Bruce joined the US Air Force in 1982, rising to the rank of lieutenant colonel during his 26 years of military service. In 23, he received the Air Medal for numerous aerial combat missions over Iraq and Afghanistan as part of Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom.
