Optimal Oncology Alternative Payment Models
Creating a rapid, continuous learning environment for oncology payment reform
The Optimal Oncology Alternative Payment Model (APM) initiative engaged oncology leaders to understand successes and lessons across value-based payment models in the specialty. Beginning in 2018, Tapestry collaborated with provider representatives and associations, technology experts, payers, patient advocacy organizations, and others to provide a platform for candid learning and dialogue across leaders involved in designing and implementing oncology APM pilots.
The platform—an informal advisory council of key innovators in oncology payment reform—served as a sounding board and an outlet for candid exchange to align objectives across pilots, share and discuss solutions for pain points, and identify good practices. The council catalyzed insights on opportunities for APM improvement, reinsurance as a tool to mitigate risk, and, as published by a subset of participants in the American Journal of Managed Care, lessons from commercial insurers on pilot programs.
Participants have credited the council’s discussions for informing decision-making on APM participation and design. Questions raised during council discussions about the impact of APMs in oncology continue to be relevant today, as underscored in new research by former participants in the Journal of Clinical Oncology.
The oncology APMs advisory council met on an ongoing basis through 2021 and was co-hosted by the American Cancer Society.
